Root Cause

  • Our investigation identified that a backend database latency issue caused timeouts and delays within the service that sends messages in Teams.
  • We’re continuing to investigate the underlying issue that caused latency within the database and more details will be provided in the full post-incident report.

  • ・9:04 AM – We started receiving multiple signals from social media indicating an issue with Microsoft Teams messaging features.
  • ・9:11 AM – We raised a high-priority investigation and started to analyze diagnostic data.
  • ・9:42 AM – We identified anomalies within our backend database infrastructure.
  • ・10:06 AM – Service logs showed that internal middleware services that enable the chat functionality within Microsoft Teams were having issues interacting with our backend database infrastructure (CosmosDB).
  • ・10:19 AM – While we were investigating the cause of the issue, telemetry indicated that the service was showing signs of improvement.
  • We continued to review infrastructure logs to isolate the source of the issue.
  • ・11:02 AM – We started to review mitigation options to expedite service recovery.
  • ・11:23 AM – Telemetry indicated that the impacted Microsoft Teams scenarios had recovered to approximately 97% availability.
  • ・11:45 AM – Telemetry indicated that the service was performing within acceptable thresholds.
  • We began a period of extended monitoring whilst we continued to investigate the cause of the issue.
  • ・1:10 PM – After a period of extended monitoring, we declared the issue resolved.
  • However, we continued our investigation to isolate the root cause of the issue.
